The Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) has debuted a custom-wrapped, two-car commemorative train to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
The rolling tribute honors the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial and highlights the deep historical ties between Pennsylvania and New Jersey—the two states PATCO has connected across the Delaware River for over half a century. The special train is scheduled to run daily throughout the PATCO system during the national America 250 celebration period.
The custom exterior artwork transforms the transit line’s standard rolling stock into a moving canvas of the region’s pivotal role in early American history. Each car in the two-car consist features independent, state-specific custom wraps seamlessly tied together by flowing red, white, and blue ribbons:
- The New Jersey Car: Highlights the Garden State’s rich contributions to the American Revolution and local culture. The imagery features the iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware, the Battleship New Jersey, Camden City Hall, a vintage PATCO railcar, Jersey Shore scenery, and a map illustrating the Delaware River shoreline.
- The Pennsylvania Car: Focuses heavily on Philadelphia’s status as the cradle of American liberty. Visual elements include detailed illustrations of Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Benjamin Franklin, the official Pennsylvania state seal, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and a “We the People” U.S. Constitution scroll.
The commemorative train serves as both a history lesson and a celebration of regional infrastructure. Since its inception in 1969, PATCO has acted as a vital transportation artery connecting South Jersey residents to employment, education, and cultural events in Philadelphia.
“For nearly 60 years, PATCO has connected people, communities, and opportunities on both sides of the Delaware River,” PATCO General Manager John Rink said. “As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, this commemorative train honors the pivotal role Pennsylvania and New Jersey played in America’s founding while recognizing the connections that continue to bring our region together today.”
Passengers traveling between Philadelphia and South Jersey can catch the America 250 train on regular daily routes as it transits back and forth across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
