Cooper University Health Care has achieved a major national milestone, earning the Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
The prestigious three-year accreditation recognizes Cooper University Hospital’s exceptional standards in patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical outcomes for both adult and teenage patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery.
To achieve this designation, Cooper’s program underwent a rigorous, independent site review. Experts evaluated everything from surgical standards and clinical protocols to the hospital’s patient-centered care model, ensuring the team meets the highest national benchmarks for specialized weight-loss care.
“This accreditation reflects the dedication of our entire multidisciplinary team and our commitment to helping patients achieve long-term health and wellness,” Dr. Rohit Patel, head of the Division of Bariatric Surgery at Cooper said. “At Cooper, we provide comprehensive, personalized care before, during, and after surgery to ensure our patients have the support they need for lifelong success. We are proud to be recognized nationally for the quality and safety of our bariatric surgery program, including our ability to care for adolescent patients.”
Obesity is often tied to serious chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. To help patients achieve lasting health improvements, Cooper’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery pairs its fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons with a comprehensive, wrap-around support network.
The program integrates:
- Advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.
- Specialized clinical nursing and medical staff.
- Nutritional counseling and behavioral health support.
- Monthly patient support groups.
- Coordinated care alongside primary care physicians and specialists.
By securing the specific adolescent accreditation, Cooper expands its capability to provide this highly structured, life-changing care safely to teenagers struggling with severe obesity.
