RWJBarnabas Health is set to make history in New Jersey by launching the state’s very first Street Medicine Program. Mirroring a compassionate health care model recently popularized on television, the groundbreaking initiative will debut at Trinitas Regional Medical Center (TRMC) in Elizabeth to deliver critical clinical care directly to people experiencing homelessness.
The program aims to combat high mortality rates among the unhoused population by deploying highly trained medical and community health teams into the city, treating patients where they are, and connecting them with vital social safety nets. Organizers expect the Elizabeth initiative to serve as a blueprint for statewide expansion.
The launch comes on the heels of the concept gaining national attention during the second season of The Pitt, the Emmy Award-winning hit drama on HBO Max. In the series, doctors from a fictional Pittsburgh hospital take to public spaces to provide urgent care to unhoused individuals.
RWJBarnabas Health just turned that televised fiction into a reality for the residents of Union County.
The initiative addresses a critical gap in the healthcare system, as vulnerable, unhoused individuals often face severe barriers to traditional hospital or clinic-based care, frequently resulting in worsened treatable conditions and higher mortality rates.
The official rollout Took place today, May 19, on the campus of Trinitas Regional Medical Center.
The event featured a speaking program, a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, and the first public showcase of the Street Medicine Program’s brand-new, customized mobile medical unit. A prominent lineup of state and local officials, alongside healthcare executives, will gather to commemorate the launch, including:
- J. Christian Bollwage, Mayor of Elizabeth
- Joseph Cryan, New Jersey State Senator
- Nancy M. DiLiegro, President & CEO, Trinitas Regional Medical Center
- Balpreet Grewal-Virk, Senior Vice President for Community Health, RWJBarnabas Health
- Dr. Edward Egan, TRMC Emergency Department attending physician
