Local residents have a newly modernized hub for their weekly grocery runs. Village Super Market officially celebrated the completion of a multi-million-dollar renovation at the ShopRite of Livingston on Monday, May 18, 2026, marking the occasion with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony and a major charitable donation.
Livingston Mayor Shawn Klein joined store associates and members of the Sumas family—the multigenerational operators behind Village Super Market—to cut the ribbon. The formal ceremony followed a festive, family-friendly customer appreciation event on Sunday that featured live jazz from Livingston High School students, vendor samplings, face painting, and culinary demonstrations like a tuna cutting and the cracking of a giant parmesan wheel.
The extensive, storewide overhaul touches nearly every corner of the location, introducing new flooring, updated lighting, fresh décor, and energy-efficient, state-of-the-art refrigerated cases designed to elevate the standard shopping experience.
“The Sumas family has been serving the Livingston community since 1966. This renovation reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering the best possible shopping experience for our customers and the community,” said Perry Blatt, Senior Vice President of Village Super Market and a third-generation grocer. “From expanded specialty departments to enhanced prepared foods and upgraded service areas, every detail was designed to bring greater convenience, quality and value to our shoppers.”
The multi-million-dollar investment focuses heavily on expanded, service-oriented fresh food sections:
- Certified Kosher Bakery: Supervised by the VAAD of Metro West, this newly anchored department features an artisan bread bar, revamped display cases, and a specialty cannoli program boasting more than 15 unique varieties. It builds upon a massive expansion to the store’s dedicated kosher market last year, which brought over 1,500 grocery items together in a single consolidated space.
- International Cheese Department: A designated destination holding hundreds of domestic and global cheeses, staffed by an in-store cheesemonger available to custom-cut blocks and curate personalized charcuterie boards.
- Prepared Foods & Sushi Bar: An expansive meal-solutions area featuring everything from rotisserie chicken and hot sandwiches to full salad, soup, and Mediterranean hot bars. In-store chefs will staff a fresh sushi counter, which will host “Sushi Wednesday” promotions with select $5 rolls.
- Expanded Produce: A larger department focusing on a wider variety of organic options, pre-cut convenience fruits, and premium “Sweetest Batch” berries.
In tandem with the grand reopening festivities, store leadership presented a $5,000 donation to the West Essex YMCA. The funds were awarded through a joint effort between the Sumas Family Foundation and Village Super Market’s You Choose. We Give. initiative—a corporate program that empowers local store associates to select and vote on the neighborhood nonprofits making the most meaningful impacts.
Village Super Market remains one of the most prominent family-owned grocery operators in the region. Still managed today by third-generation members of the Sumas family, the company commands a footprint of 30 ShopRite supermarkets spanning New Jersey, New York, and eastern Pennsylvania, alongside specialty Manhattan markets Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market.
